about

For centuries, the Ottoman Empire bridged West and East, from the shores of Bosporus to the Black Sea. Through lands, mountains and valleys emerge a musical interaction between nations. Influencing and intermingling with each other, they created different musical languages with a subtle Ottoman flavour while remaining faithful to the particularities of local folklores.

Many traditional pieces from the Balkans carry the name of the village or the city that they come from. Ihtimanska means, in the feminine, “from Ihtiman,” a city in central Bulgaria, the country nestled between Turkey and Macedonia, a region with strong musical similitude and rich folklores from which the duo Ihtimanska takes its repertoire and its inspiration.

Ihtimanska is a sweet dialogue between the saxophone and accordion. The gentle complicity is an unusual blending of voices drawing on their musical experiences through the teaching and encounters of inspiring musicians from New York, Istanbul and beyond. The duo combination allows music to flow naturally, and allows for a sensitive personal interpretation with a touch of creativity on beautiful traditional pieces that evoke joy, sadness, love and gratitude to life.
